About the role
As our Quality Control and Finishing Officer, you are the person who decides whether a garment is good enough to leave the factory.
You will be responsible for maintaining quality throughout the production process, from inspecting incoming fabric and trims, to monitoring construction during sewing, through finishing, pressing, final inspection and packing.
This is a hands-on production-floor role. You will work closely with the pattern, cutting, sewing and production teams to identify problems early, prevent repeat defects, and ensure every finished garment meets the approved specifications before it reaches the client.
You will be expected to be detail-oriented, firm about standards, and comfortable stopping or rejecting work when it does not meet the required quality level.
Key responsibilities
Incoming materials inspection
- Inspect incoming fabrics, trims, labels, zippers, buttons and other production materials before they enter production.
- Check fabric for defects, colour consistency, stains, weaving issues, holes and other irregularities.
- Verify materials against approved samples, specifications and production requirements.
- Record and report material defects or discrepancies immediately.
- Ensure rejected materials are clearly identified and separated from approved stock.
In-process quality control
- Ensure the approved sample and relevant specifications are available and clearly identified as the production reference before inspection begins.
- Conduct quality checks at key stages of production, including cutting, sewing, construction and assembly.
- Check garments against approved samples, patterns, tech packs, measurements and construction requirements.
- Identify defects early enough to prevent them from being repeated across multiple pieces.
- Inspect stitching quality, seam allowances, alignment, symmetry, fit, closures, hems, gathers, pleats and other construction details.
- Work with the production team to correct defects and ensure corrections are properly completed.
- Stop or hold production when a significant quality issue is identified, and escalate it to the Production Manager.
- Monitor recurring defects and escalate issues that require changes to the production process.
Finishing and presentation
- Inspect garments after sewing for finishing defects and inconsistencies.
- Ensure loose threads are properly trimmed and garments are free from stains, chalk marks, lint and other visible imperfections.
- Check pressing and steaming quality, ensuring garments are properly shaped and presented.
- Verify that labels, buttons, zippers, hooks, fastenings and other finishing details are correctly attached and functioning.
- Ensure garments are properly folded, packed and presented according to the required standard.
Final quality inspection
- Conduct a final inspection of every completed production order before it is approved for packing or dispatch.
- Confirm that finished garments match the approved sample and production specifications.
- Check measurements, construction, finishing, appearance and overall presentation.
- Check work returned from outside vendors, including embroidery, printing and beading, to the same standard as work done in-house.
- Reject garments that do not meet the required standard and return them for correction.
- Sign off only on garments that meet the required quality standard.
- Maintain records of rejected, reworked and approved garments.
Quality records and reporting
- Maintain accurate QC records for production orders.
- Track defects by garment, production stage, type and frequency.
- Record rework and recurring quality issues.
- Report significant quality problems to the Production Manager promptly.
- Help identify patterns in defects and recommend practical improvements to reduce waste and rework.
- Contribute to maintaining clear quality standards and checklists for recurring production processes.
Production team collaboration
- Work closely with cutters, machinists, finishers and the Production Manager to resolve quality issues.
- Communicate defects clearly and explain what needs to be corrected.
- Follow up on rejected or reworked garments to ensure corrections meet the required standard.
- Help production staff understand and consistently apply approved quality standards.
- Support the team in maintaining a culture where quality is checked throughout production rather than only at the end.
What we're looking for
We're looking for someone exacting, consistent and honest about what they find.
You should be someone who naturally asks:
- Does this match the approved sample?
- Is this the same on every piece?
- Where did this fault come from?
- Has this been fixed, or just put aside?
- Would I accept this if I were the client?
You should have:
- Previous experience in garment quality control, garment production, tailoring, fashion manufacturing or a related role.
- Strong understanding of garment construction and finishing.
- Ability to identify sewing, construction, measurement, fabric and finishing defects.
- Strong attention to detail and a good eye for quality.
- Ability to work confidently with measurements, patterns, samples and production specifications.
- Comfortable working directly on the production floor.
- Ability to communicate clearly with production staff and enforce quality standards.
- Organised and consistent with documentation and record keeping.
- Ability to work under production deadlines without compromising quality.
- Good problem-solving skills and the ability to identify the root cause of recurring defects.
A strong candidate will also have:
- Experience working in a structured garment production environment.
- Experience inspecting both samples and bulk production.
- Familiarity with tech packs, measurement charts and approved samples.
- Good knowledge of pressing, steaming, garment finishing and presentation.
- Experience tracking defects and rework.
- A high personal standard for garment quality.
A candidate who has actually made garments, and therefore knows how a fault happens rather than only how it looks, would be ideal.
The person we're looking for
Beyond experience, we're looking for someone who is:
- Exacting You notice inconsistencies, crooked labels, uneven finishing and details that don't match the approved standard.
- Consistent You apply the same standard on a quiet Tuesday as on the day before a delivery.
- Honest You do not pass work to avoid an awkward conversation.
- Firm but respectful You can reject a garment without making an enemy of the person who sewed it.
- Methodical You check in the same order every time, so nothing gets skipped.
- Calm under deadline Pressure does not lower your standard, it only makes you faster and clearer.
- Ownership-minded You understand that you are the last person to look, and you take that seriously.
- Commercially aware You understand that rework, waste and returns cost the business real money.
What success looks like
In this role, success means:
- Garments leaving the factory consistently meet approved quality standards.
- Defects are identified early rather than after an entire batch has been produced.
- Rework and avoidable production waste are reduced.
- Rework is logged, completed and re-checked, never quietly forgotten.
- Recurring quality problems are identified and addressed.
- Final garments are correctly finished, pressed, presented and packed.
- Production teams understand and consistently follow quality requirements.
- Production and management know about quality issues early enough to act on them.
- No garment is approved for dispatch simply because it is "good enough" when it does not meet the required standard.
Ultimately, we want you to become someone management can trust to say:
Nothing goes out of here that I have not looked at, and if something is wrong you will hear it from me before you hear it from the client.
